2020: A challenging year, Looking To Summer 2021

In Fall 2019, facing a 2020 deployment and having just learned we were expecting, due Spring 2020, we decided The Blue Heron would sit out the 2020 rental season and that we would make it our residence for the year. Then the pandemic hit. With deployment ultimately delayed until early July, we welcomed a baby boy home to The Blue Heron in early April. The Blue Heron has proven to be much more of a Read more…

Updates: The New and Improved for Summer 2019

The Blue Heron did not survive the hurricanes and severe storms of fall 2018 unscathed. We’ve been busy with repairs and improvements big and small. Most notably, but probably least noticeably, there’s a brand new, heavy duty roof! The pool area got a refresh for this summer, including new navy blue and white pool loungers and chairs as well as a new charcoal grill. There are eight loungers and eight chairs total, plus a shaded Read more…

Before and After: Ground Level Wet Bar Upgrade

Vision: With new wood-look tiles replacing the carpet and laminate on the ground level, the wet bar needed an update, and we wanted a more sophisticated and rustic feel. Cooler: We opted to upgrade the mini-fridge to a dual zone beverage center perfect for chilling both beer and wine, as well as spirits and fizzy drinks. We found this one online at Kings Bottle. Countertop: We loved that the soft creams, warm browns, and cool Read more…

Perks: Ocean and Sunrise/Sunset Views

One of our favorite things about The Blue Heron can also be one of the hardest things for photos to do justice…the views! Only 167 yards (250 feet) stand between The Blue Heron and Duck, N.C.’s top-rated beaches. Unlike other more developed beaches, Duck’s Sound Sea Village boasts large, wide lots. The Blue Heron’s position overlooking the beach access–which is private (for the subdivision’s owners and guests only)–translates to ocean views few third-row beach homes Read more…

Dine: The Village Table & Tavern

The Village Table and Tavern opened its doors at the tail end of Summer 2018, just one mile south of Sound Sea Village and The Blue Heron in Duck, NC. Lined with sidewalks and boasting beautiful views of the sound, the mile stretch down Duck Road presents a pleasant twenty minute stroll, five minute bike ride, or one minute drive to food and drinks! The Village Table and Tavern rightly describes itself as “casual waterfront Read more…

Before and After: Coastal Kitchen Remodel

Vision: We wanted to update and upgrade the turn-of-the-century pine and laminate builder’s grade kitchen, settling on a navy blue, white, and gray coastal look.  Cabinets: We created a classic nautical vibe by pairing KraftMaid cabinets in Midnight with beadboarding (Home Depot) and white countertops. The DuraKraft Plus finishing provides a thicker, smoother finish that protects against bumps, spills, and scratches. Though a coastal favorite, by bucking white kitchen cabinets, we avoided white-undertone mismatch with Read more…

Before and After: Nautical Bunkbed Room Makeover

Vision: We wanted a red, white, and blue nautical-themed bedroom. Bedding: It took some searching and waiting to find patterned coverlet sets available in both twin size and full size that would appeal to children or adults. Coverlets are lightweight for summer use, and patterned prints camouflage signs of wear. Less bulky than comforters, coverlets wash easier and avoid the post-wash struggle to reinsert a duvet. The accent pillows and shams included help give the Read more…
